Karmaloop x BlueWave Marketing’s “College of Marketing Knowledge”

BlueWave Marketing & Promotions coasted through ‘Loop headquarters a couple weeks back to profile Karmaloop Founder and CEO Greg Selkoe as well as the many goings-on ’round here.

As part of BlueWave’s “College of Marketing Knowledge” series, BWM went on location to visit with some of Boston’s hottest marketing support companies to find out what makes them tick and how they reached the heights each respective workplace has achieved (hint: it has something to do with an unfuckwithable marketing department).

Karmaloop on NECN

Local cable news station NECN (New England Cable News… duh) stopped by the Karmaloop flagship store a few weeks back and were stoked enough by what they found to feature the shop and CEO Greg Selkoe in the station’s Power Players segment.

Check out the video above as the boss man gives a tour of the ol’ brick & mortar, with prominent product placement for our Beantown brethren ®Society Original Products, special appearances by Chip Tha Ripper, Mos Def and Common, and so much more!

NECN sez:

In 1999, Greg Selkoe, the mastermind of Karmaloop.com, had the crazy idea of selling clothes on the Internet.  Today, the venture that most entrepreneurial hard hitters said wouldn’t fly, is now a major arbiter [of] street style.  Selkoe is quite the karma chameleon himself!  With a Masters’ Degree from Harvard in public policy, he is also a social maven, a break-dancer, and a super-savvy businessman.  What gives him the Midas touch? “It’s already out of control, but maybe that’s part of the reason we’re successful.”

Selkoe also noted that, “I wanted to do something where I had more control and where I could express myself creatively.” He certainly has established not only his business side, but his creative side as well.  Two years ago, he launched his online show, Karmaloop TV, where he interviewed the celebrities that rock his wears, and has his sights on network cable.  He is hopeful for Boston as a city of style, and so are we!

TV PARTY!

Karmaloop set up shop at The Cable Show! 2010 convention in Los Angeles a few weeks back, and we have a grip of footage that will help you procrastinate right into the weekend.

Now, you know that when KarmaloopTV goes out, the crew goes all out – whether on our East Coast home base or lampin’ out West. With such an occasion as The Cable Show! convention, we knew the big guns had to come out to show love, and we brought some absolute cannons. Shaun White, the world’s best (competitive) snowboarder and skateboarder rolled through, Clinton Sparks got familiar, and legendary street artists Shepard Fairey (Obey) and SABER dropped in to deck out the booth in their respected and respective styles. Check out Parts I & II below!

An Interview with a Pyromaniac

As our campaign with Germany-based Pyromaniac comes to close, we bring to you lead designer and CEO Kian Gerowgan, a veteran of the graffiti game who has hustled his talents into making Pyro one of the brands for graf heads to look out for in 2010 and beyond.

K.G. and crew have bombed, tagged and networked throughout Europe with some of the hottest graf artists alive, and now that they’re bringing European street styles to The States, keep an eye on those blank walls, billboards and bus windows in your area…

With the success of this Spring’s line featuring the work of Ata Bozaci, a.k.a. TOAST, will you be working more with him on future lines?

Due to our concept in each collection, we work with different artists. The collab with TOAST was a highlight for us. TOAST is a very skilled and talented artist and is famous all over the world. It was an honor to work with Ata and he showed us that we are on the right path. Two years ago he might not have been interested in a collabo with us.
We have a lot of skilled and famous artists in our portfolio, which brings us respect and of course opens us new doors and give us more opportunities to the future. We will definitely work with Ata again when the time is right. By mid summer we will reproduce some of the bestsellers from this collection.

Right now we are working on our Spring/Summer 2011 collection featuring a South Korean Crew, The Seoulmates (JNJ Crew – SUK). The Seoulmates are legends in South Korea [and] they had a tour in Europe last summer, sponsored by KIA and Montana Cans. We are planning some events and live acts with them by end of summer. The release of the collection will be at the Bright trade show in July in Berlin. We are looking forward to see the range of that collection on Karmaloop.

The tees featuring King Louie (The King Louie Tee, The Thinker Tee and The Wanted Tee) have been very popular this season – what were your thoughts creating this mascot and what adventures can we expect from Louie this summer and fall?

We knew the story [behind] TOAST’s Pyrochimps, and as we were looking for an artist for the Spring/Summer collection, his artworks were perfect for us.

If you could work with any artist – either in street art or more traditional mediums – who would that be?

REVOK would definitely be one of our top choices!

The brand is very popular in Europe with artists and musicians; have you seen a lot of love from American counterparts?

We have just started our business in The States. It is very exciting for us to see that people like our style, our philosophy and our background. We have had a lot of requests from musicians and breakdancers who want to represent our brand. We will build up our U.S. crew step by step.
It is very difficult for us being a  European brand in the United States. It’s a different market, a different way of working and also the price-structures and other factors like logistics make it very tough for a European brand like us. We have a new distributor in Canada so things will be easier next season.

How far will Germany go in this summer’s World Cup?

Germany will be the new world champion – no doubt!

Who is the Superlative Conspiracy? [Wi:, Es, Si]

Founded by six avid skateboarders and snowboarders in Stockholm, Sweden, circa 1999 and currently established in nineteen countries, WeSC is not merely a brand within the streetwear industry, but a company that now defines the streetwear industry.

Through addressing people with awareness – no matter the race, religion or financial background – that each and all share the values and lifestyle of the brand’s founders, WeSC delivers “life after skate” fashion… that is,  a more developed style targeting people outside the skateboard community while holding its core values. Skaters never die, but, shit, we do get older.

Each WeSC drop includes a Swedish Chef-sized smorgasbord of garments, and not like other fashion companies, WeSC is unpredictable and does not follow trends. Trust us on this one. Furthermore hosting an array of “WeActivists” made up of artsists, musicians, skateboarders, snowboarders, visionaries, and men and women that simply define the near future, this is one brand that you should not so much as look out for – but rather, know that they are looking out for you.

As you can tell by the site, WeSC takeover week is in full-motherfucking-effect and we’re going to give you all that you need to know about the brand in the coming days. For now, check out some killer video from two of the Blogs’ heroes, skateboarder Chris Pastras and street artist Stash, as well as a beeeaaautiful serenade courtesy of  Peter Stormare and Jason Lee to ride y’all doggies into the sunset.
